Montessori Model United Nations |
| What is the Montessori Model
UN program? In its simplest form, the MMUN is a simulation of actual UN committees that discuss real issues and convene to debate and vote on the resolutions that each committee proposes. |
|
|
| Who specifically is this
program designed for? It was designed especially for Montessori students ages 9-15 (upper elementary and lower secondary). Montessori schools from throughout the US and from around the world participate in the MMUN. |
| Why run a Model UN program for
younger students? Elementary and middle school students are at the sensitive period for reason, justice and morality. Therefore, this is the perfect age for discussing big issues with children. |
| What is the format of the
program? This year, we sent student delegates to New York. Each school provides a minimum of one delegation of 4-to-6 students who represent a country. Then, working in pairs, each student-pair is assigned a specific committee and a specific topic to study. In an after school program, students review what they know about the United Nations. Then they research their topic with regard to their country's position on that topic. Student delegates share their views with other delegates in New York in early March. When they return, they create a presentation to share with other students and with the community. All past and present Montessori students in grades 4-9 are eligible to participate in this portion of the program. Every other year, an after school program will be run for students in grades 3-6. Participants will learn about the United Nations and as a group, will decide upon a way to share their knowledge. This may be in the format of a scrapbook, a play, a board game, an audio-visual presentation, etc. |

| How do students benefit? Students will:
|
| Is there a fee? Yes, there is a cost to transporting a group of students to New York for the final event. The $150 registration fee for participating students and chaperones is due in early October, to lock in your place. Checks payable to "Parent Connection." For those attending the event in March, there are costs for transportation, lodging and meals. These fees are spaced out so as not to overwhelm family budgets. We have many fund raisers to lower the total cost. Please contact Ms. Sarah if you would like to help with any of our fund raising events. |
| Who can participate? There is a limit to the number of students who may participate in the trip to New York. If your child is interested in participating, please ask Ms. Sarah for an application. There is no limit to the number of students who may enroll in the after school portion of the program. Please look in your child's communication folder for upcoming information.
