THE BENEFITS OF EATING TOGETHER AS A FAMILY
What is dinnertime like in your home? Is it convenient for family members to heat up their own meal in the microwave at different times and retreat to their own corners of the house?
For many families, eating dinner together has become a lost art—but it proves to be a simple, effective way to reduce the risk of youth substance abuse and to raise healthier children.
The facts are on the table: Eating dinner together every night keeps the doors of communication open. It’s the perfect time and place to reconnect and to show your kids that they are your priority. Sitting across the table is where and when you can find out more about your children’s likes, dislikes and daily life. Having this information can help you direct your children toward positive activities and behavior, reducing the likelihood that they will get involved with alcohol, tobacco and/or illegal drugs.

♦ At 70% lower risk for substance abuse
♦ Half as likely to try cigarettes
♦ Half as likely to be daily cigarette smokers
♦ Half as likely to get drunk monthly
♦ One third less likely to try alcohol
♦ Likelier to get better grades in school
♦ Less likely to have friends who drink alcohol and use marijuana
♦ Likelier to have parents who take responsibility - teen drug use
♦ Almost 40% likelier to say future drug use will never happen

REPORTING ABSENCES
If your child is going to be absent or tardy, please call the school office at 261-0060 each day prior to 8:30 a.m.  A voicemail message may be left at any time.  If you leave a voice message, please include your child’s name, grade, reason for absence and your name.

ATTENDANCE & TARDINESS
Regular school attendance contributes to a successful school experience. Coming late to school, even just a few minutes is disruptive to a child’s education. Other children in the classroom lose time also when a child arrives late and the lesson is interrupted.

PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD ARRIVE AT SCHOOL ON TIME.
THE INCOMING BELL RINGS AT 8:15 A.M. AND STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN THEIR SEATS AT 8:20 A.M.
ALSO, IF YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE AT SCHOOL,
PLEASE CALL 261-0060 BY 8:30 A.M.

TELEPHONE USE AFTER SCHOOL
Students are not allowed to use the telephone after school to make after school play arrangements. Emergency situations are different! We will do our best to be of service to you and your student if an emergency arises and they need to make a phone call.

ATTENTION DOG OWNERS!
Every dog owner has a responsibility to ensure that their pet does not cause a nuisance to others. This means that as the owner, you must comply with certain laws, most of these are straightforward and are there to ensure that people and dogs can live happily and safely in the community.

If you decide to bring your dog on school grounds there are some key points that you must be responsible for:

1. Train your dog in basic obedience so that it is under control at all times
2. Train your dog to go to the toilet at home. If your pet fouls in public make sure that you clean it up.
3. Make sure that your dog is kept on a lead when in public.
4. Don’t let your dog become a nuisance to others around you.
5. Make sure that your dog has a collar and tag.
6. Realize that in many instances, your dog is larger than many of our students. This can be frightening and intimidating to our students. Be sure to have your dog out of the way so that students have easy access to our grounds, sidewalks, and building entrance.

You are welcome to bring your dog to the school and school grounds if you are a responsible dog owner. Please follow the points listed above so that students, and parents can feel safe and comfortable when your dog is here.

JOHN MARSHALL TRAFFIC REMINDERS
There are a few things that we can do around our school that would help things go a bit more smoothly when you are dropping off or picking up students.
1. Do not exceed a 15 MPH speed near the school.
2. Do not park in the student drop-off/pick-up area.
3. Be respectful of our neighbors. Please don’t block their driveway and be sure to park in a manner that allows     them to access the drive safely.
4. Do not park in the areas that are designated for buses, as they need a significant amount of space to maneuver.
5. Yield to the Safety Patrols.

CELL TELEPHONES
We have noticed that an increased number of students are in possession of cell telephones while at school. If you and your child decide to bring a cell telephone to school, please be aware of our school policy regarding cell telephones. Phones must be stored in their backpack or in the school office. Phones should not be carried on their person. The use of cell phones is prohibited during the school day. We ask that you have this discussion with your child and if you have any questions, please contact Shawn Sullivan.

MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS
With 350 students in our school, it is very difficult to deliver personal messages. Please make every attempt to make after school plans, transportation decisions, where your child should meet you, visits to a friend’s house, etc. ahead of time. Messages taken by the office personnel will be placed in the teacher’s voice mailbox and not hand delivered. Teachers give priority to their instructional time, however, they will do their very best to listen to messages prior to the school day ending.

PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION
Please remember that playground supervision begins at 8:00 a.m. If your child needs to be dropped off prior to this time, please contact Wausau Child Care.

REMINDERS!!
· Supervision on the John Marshall playground does not begin until 8:00 a.m. Students should not be on the    playground prior to that time.
· The first bell rings at 8:15 a.m. for students to come into the school. The 8:20 a.m. bell signifies the beginning of the school day. Students should be in their classroom and ready to learn by 8:20. Students arriving after 8:20 a.m. are considered tardy and must check-in at the office.
· All families received a John Marshall Parent Handbook the first week of school. Please take time to review this booklet for some very important information.
· The Wausau School District Parent/Student Handbook is available online at the Wausau School District website at: www.wausau.k12.wi.us

HEALTH ROOM REMINDER
Students entering the health office with flu like symptoms will have their temperature checked. A temperature >100.0 will require that the student be sent home. Remember, students need to remain at home until they have been fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication. Thank you for your help in minimizing the spread of illness and keeping our students healthy!

KEEP A CHILD HOME IF THEY ARE ILL
As cooler weather is upon us, we see an increase in the number of children who are ill and come to school ill. When children are ill, they don’t learn as well and they can be spreading their cold or viral germs to others. Please keep you child at home or make alternate plans for them until they are healthy.

In the previous 24 hours keep your child home if:
Fever (temperature 100 degrees F or greater)
Vomiting (usually 24 hour recovery)
Frequent diarrhea (usually 24 hour recovery)
Upper respiratory illness with frequent cough/drainage
Strep throat (until 24 hours after treatment has begun)
Pink eye (until 24 hours after treatment has begun)
Head lice (until after treatment and all nits removed)
Undiagnosed or untreated skin rash or sores that cannot be covered

You can help your child stay healthy by encouraging frequent and thorough hand washing. Hand Washing is the single most important defense against disease.

BUS LOADING ZONE
Please be respectful of the bus-loading zone that is located on Broadway Avenue. No vehicles should be in this area before or after school! We need to have your cooperation with this important safety concern.  First Student Letter

TRAFFIC AROUND THE SCHOOL

The blocks around the school are very busy with students before and after school each day. We ask that everyone help keep our students safe by observing these actions:

1. Never drive faster than 15MPH around the school.
2. Please be respectful of our Student Safety Patrols by not parking in the crosswalks or close to the corner.
3. Please be respectful of the school buses by not parking in the bus pick-up areas. We have three buses that come and go from our school and they need room to maneuver safely.
4. Please encourage your child to cross at the corner, as it is very dangerous for them to dart out between cars in the middle of the block.
5. Please don’t park in front of our neighbor’s driveway or use their driveway as a turn around as they find this to be quite frustrating.

Child safety is a responsibility shared by all of us. Please be extra careful around our school.

STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP
Please continue to be considerate of our John Marshall neighbors surrounding our school. These homeowners need to have access to their driveways even during our busy student drop off and pick up times. Please ensure that your parked vehicle allows safe and easy access in and out of their driveways. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

PICK-UP REMINDERS
* Please drop off and pick-up students at Lamont St., Weston Ave., or the south side of Broadway Ave.

*Please do NOT block our neighbors' driveways when parking your vehicle.

* All buses will load and unload on the north side of Broadway Ave.

* If a child is picked-up or dropped off and needs to cross the street, please instruct them to walk to the closest safety patrol corner. Children should NEVER cross the street by cutting between vehicles.

VISITORS IN SCHOOL
Visitors are welcome at John Marshall School. However, all classroom contacts during the school day need to be initiated through the office. All parents and visitors should register in the school office each time they visit and wear a Visitor’s Badge while in the building.

ANNUAL NOTICE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION REFERRAL AND EVALUATION PROCEDURES
Upon request, the Wausau School District is required to evaluate a child for eligibility for special education services. A request for evaluation is known as a referral. When the district receives a referral, the district will appoint an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to determine if the child has a disability, and if the child needs special education services. The district locates, identifies, and evaluates all children with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private (including religious) schools, elementary schools and secondary schools located in the school district.
A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker, or administrator of a social agency, who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to refer the child, including a homeless child, to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the child's parent that the referral will be made.
Others, including parents, who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability, may also refer the child, including a homeless child, to the school district in which the child resides.
Referrals must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability. A referral may be made by contacting Tammy Fruik, Director of Special Education, Wausau School District, at (715) 261-0535, or by writing her at 415 Seymour Street, Wausau WI 54403.

REQUEST TO WITHHOLD DIRECTORY INFORMATION
The Wausau School District is allowed by law to disclose information regarding its students. If you wish to have directory information regarding your child withheld, the “Request to Withhold Directory Information” form must be completed. This form can be found on the Wausau School District Website or forms are available in our office.
