The Drug-Free Communities Support
Program (DFC) is a collaborative effort between
the Executive Office of the President, Office of
National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), and the Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
(SAMHSA). Grant awards are made available by SAMHSA
through an interagency agreement with the ONDCP.
The purpose of the funding is to address two major
goals:
1. Reduce substance abuse among youth and, over
time, among adults by addressing the factors in
a community that increase the risk of substance
abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the
risk of substance abuse;
2. Establish and strengthen collaboration
among communities, private nonprofit agencies, and
Federal, State, and local and tribal governments
to support the efforts of community coalitions to
prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth.
The Wausau School District, in conjunction
with the Marathon County Alcohol and Other Drug
Partnership Council (AOD Partnership), was awarded
a DFC Support Program Grant in 2005 and has the
potential to continue through 2009. Knowing that
no single agency can combat the problem of substance
use, the Wausau School District is working with
the Marathon County Alcohol and Other Drug Partnership
Council with members including: community leaders,
parents, youth, religious and fraternal organizations,
health care and business professionals, law enforcement,
and the media. The AOD Partnership Council mission
is working together to eliminate the misuse and
abuse of alcohol and other drugs in our community.
The Drug-Free Communities Support Program enables
the AOD Partnership to strengthen their coordination
and prevention efforts, encourage citizen participation
in substance abuse reduction efforts, and disseminate
information about effective programs. The AOD Partnership
holds regular monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday
of each month from 11:30 - 12:30 p.m. at 212 River
Drive in Wausau.
