READING/LANGUAGE ARTS
Your child will be encouraged to make reading a lifelong habit through the reading of numerous class and independent books. Comprehension strategies become more developed as students are expected to identify main ideas and their supporting details and to use context clues to identify unknown words in passages. Your child will also respond to literature through writing and discussion. He/she will identify a variety of literature, edit writing for conventions and spelling, study a list of high frequency core words , research materials to collect and organize information, and practice the correct use of cursive language.
REMINDER: All library books are due each Thursday.

MATH
Problem solving in math becomes more complex with fourth grade students being expected to use strategies to solve a problem and then support their answers. Your child will be encouraged to use math knowledge to predict outcomes and make estimations. Students focus on mastering their multiplication and division facts and are introduced to the addition and subtraction of fractions. In addition, students will add and subtract four-digit numbers, understand the different units of money and know how to make change, measure length, capacity, weight and temperature, divide with a remainder in the quotient, multiply 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, and identify geometric shapes.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Your child will compare Wisconsin to other
regions of the world. He/she will identify Wisconsin's cultural heritage and
develop an individual sense of belonging, study the influence of Native Americans,
explorers, immigrants and community builders on the state, recognize the role
of agriculture in Wisconsin, and compare how Wisconsin's environment has changed
due to human involvement throughout history.
ART
Fourth
graders learn to appreciate and analyze art from various cultures. They are encouraged
to make judgments using art terms, and explore the work of fine artists in weekly
classes with an art specialist.
By working with clay, paint and ink, your child can choose various design
elements and principles to develop his or her own artistic style. Mrs. West
is the art specialist at our school.
MUSIC
Through continuing study of the recorder and other activities, your child explores harmony, meter, syncopation, melody and tempo. In the weekly music classes, your child will sing and listen to a variety of music styles from varied regions of the world. Our music specialist is Mrs. Lenselink.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
In
fourth grade, your child will continue to develop basic movement skills, while
exploring the concept of a healthy body.
A physical education specialist,
Mr. Graham, will help your child recognize the importance and enjoyment of physical
activities. Students participate in a variety of cooperative learning activities.
HOW PARENTS CAN HELP
Parents are a child's
first and most important teacher. If you approach learning as challenging and
worthwhile, your child will too. Here are some things you can do to enhance your
child's learning:
Allot time for your child to do homework projects or independent
reading.
Be available and help your child work through homework projects.
Practice estimation skills with your child by rounding prices of items in stores
and then estimating the total.
Let your child practice using measurement tools
when you are cooking.
Help your child select books that are appropriate to
read. Read together.
Encourage your child to write by having them correspond
with relatives and pen pals, or keep a journal.
Discuss what your child sees
on TV. Ask them about the difference between news and other programs. Ask them
"who, what, when, and why" questions about the programs they are watching.
Keep regular contact with your child's teacher.
TOGETHER WE CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BECOME A LIFE-LONG LEARNER.
WHEN PARENTS AND TEACHERS WORK TOGETHER, THE CHILD ALWAYS COMES OUT A WINNER!
