Please note the following letter about the District's May 7th meeting
with School Security Expert Paul Timm, of RETA Security. It is one way
we hope to keep families informed about District plans to: "Provide
safe, secure, flexible, inviting, and well maintained environments that
nurture student well-being and enhance teaching and learning."
Proactive and Holistic Security Presentation by
expert Paul Timm sets the stage for school safety committees
One of the Wausau School District's Shared Key Interests is to: "Provide
safe, secure, flexible, inviting, and well-maintained environments that
nurture student well-being and enhance teaching and learning. "Increasing
the focus on safe schools helps bring that Interest to life. This spring
marked the initiation of a renewed emphasis on school security and safety
in the Wausau School District.
All District schools are developing safe schools committees to ensure
safe environments both in the building and across the school campus.
Members of the District's safe schools committees met the evening of
May 7, 2012, to hear Paul Timm, President of RETA Security and a national
school safety expert, address steps schools could take right away to
make their schools safer places to learn and teach.
Timm told participants, "Don't let fear or a bad incident become
the driver to move the District ahead in the direction that you really
know it should be moving anyway." He suggested school districts
look at a number of steps, including:
" Involve everyone in school safety and security. Building strong
relationships with students can provide critical information before
someone makes a bad decision that affects the school's security. Parents
and students should be part of the discussions and safety decision making.
Timm also encouraged participants not to overlook support staff members,
including bus drivers. Everyone needs to have an awareness of safety
issues, be properly trained, and know his/her role in an emergency.
" Timm encourages schools to make use of technology to keep people
informed. Personal safety can be increased when individuals are aware
of the security software and cell phone applications (Apps) available
to them.
" Common sense steps can alleviate possible emergency situations.
Keeping exterior doors closed and locked, removing valuables from view
in parked cars, locking classroom doors when leaving for a time, can
all help prevent intruders, theft, and security breaches.
" Planning and staff training to ensure that all visitors to a
school stop in the office or are rerouted to the office by staff can
prevent individuals from reaching classroom areas without proper screening
or authority.
" Practical tips for handling major security issues were discussed.
Timm provided participants with a number of practical and free governmental
and non-profit resources available to schools through the Internet.
The bottom line, according to Timm, is that whatever effort you take
before a crisis will pay large dividends in the long run. He encouraged
the District to continue to work to create more secure learning environments
for all of its schools. Dr. Jeff Lindell, Interim Director of Pupil
Services stated, "Addressing the safety and security needs of our
students is an important first step in helping them achieve their fullest
potential."
